Summary

Le Ballon de Ternes is your classic Parisian brasserie – a red awning, a fresh seafood gallery and smart white table cloth with red velvet banquette seats. It is dog friendly and the menu has all the traditional French dishes you want to indulge in while in Paris. But they don’t really hit the spot all the time. Seasoning could be a touch heavy handed and preparation can be sloppy in some occasions.

What is the food like?

Average traditional French. The menu is filled classic French dishes like onion soup, escargot, pot-au-feu, foie gras, steak tartare, steak and fries, sole meunière, as well as fresh seafood like oysters, whelks, prawn and crab. Ingredients are fresh, but seasoning could be a touch heavy handed and preparation can be sloppy in some occasions.

How is the drinks selection?

Simple French. 26 choices of red wine, 12 choices of white, 2 rosés and 7 champagnes from all the main wine regions of France. Most bottles are priced between €30 to €60 with a bottle of 2012 Pauillac from Château Haut Batailley for €140 if you are looking to mark an occasion.

What is the place like?

Classic Parisian brasserie. Le Ballon des Ternes dons smart white table cloth with red velvet banquette seats in a marigold coloured interior with wood features. An imposing painted tile ceiling artwork adorn the main dining hall. Look out for the upside table on the ceiling around the corner from there. Externally, there is a fresh seafood gallery under the classic red awnings as well as alfresco seatings to savour Paris.

Who are the patrons?

Predominantly holiday-makers from Hyatt Regency hotel across the road. A mix of business and casual dinners.

How was the service?

Purposeful. Warm welcome followed by efficient drinks and food service.

Is it child friendly?

Yes, a family-friendly restaurant with adequate space for baby pushchair.

Is it dog friendly?

Yes. Furry friends are welcome indoor and outdoor as with most restaurants in Paris.

Good value?

Decent. Prices are regular for a brasserie just on the outskirt of Paris. An average of €14 for a starter and mains ranges from €22 for a steak tartare to €42 for a sole meunière. The restaurant does not charge any discretionary service charge.

See below for what my dining companions and I indulged in April 2022 for this review (prices quoted include VAT):

Wine

2016 St. Emilion Grand Cru Château Haut Saint Brice (Recommend)

Paris traditional classic local french restaurant brasserie bistro hyatt regency paris etoile escargot marrow bone whelks oyster seafood sole meuniere steak tartare alfresco bearnaise

This medium bodied St. Emilion Grand Cru made from 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc is an easy drinking red. Hints of oak, leather and blackberry on the nose. Dry with good acidity on the palate. Evaporates off your tongue. €55

Starters

Bulots (Whelks with mayonaise) (Do not recommend)

Paris traditional classic local french restaurant brasserie bistro hyatt regency paris etoile escargot marrow bone whelks oyster seafood sole meuniere steak tartare alfresco bearnaise dog friendly

A generous amount of fresh and large whelks. They were brimming with natural briny and sweet flavours. Shame that quite a number of them have sand in them which made the dish inedible. €10

Saumon fume (Thick smoked salmon with fruity cream) (Do not recommend)

Paris traditional classic local french restaurant brasserie bistro hyatt regency paris etoile escargot marrow bone whelks oyster seafood sole meuniere steak tartare alfresco bearnaise dog friendly

The smoked salmon was dry and the toast wasn’t fresh, almost stale. Cream infused with herbs and a touch of cheese was delicious, but wasn’t enough to save the dish.€18

Escargot (Six large snails from Burgundy) (Strongly recommend)

Paris traditional classic local french restaurant brasserie bistro hyatt regency paris etoile escargot marrow bone whelks oyster seafood sole meuniere steak tartare alfresco bearnaise dog friendly

One of the defining dish that put French cuisine on the gastronomic map and the chef has executed this beautifully. The snails were fresh, large and juicy. Cooked with a generous amount of parsley and butter to provide you a satisfyingly rich and indulgence dish. €19

Os a Moelle (Marrow bone with sea salt and toast) (Recommend)

Paris traditional classic local french restaurant brasserie bistro hyatt regency paris etoile escargot marrow bone whelks oyster seafood sole meuniere steak tartare alfresco bearnaise dog friendly

Served hot from the kitchen. The surface was crumbly while the inside was rich and creamy. Shame that the toast wasn’t fresh, almost stale. €12

Mains

Noix de St Jacques (Provençal-style pan-sautéed scallops) (Do not recommend)

Paris traditional classic local french restaurant brasserie bistro hyatt regency paris etoile escargot marrow bone whelks oyster seafood sole meuniere steak tartare alfresco bearnaise dog friendly

Heavy handed with the garlic which overshadowed the natural sweetness of the juicy scallops. The scallops were cooked well, tender and soft. €32

Rognon de veau (Veal kidney in mustard sauce) (Recommend)

Paris traditional classic local french restaurant brasserie bistro hyatt regency paris etoile escargot marrow bone whelks oyster seafood sole meuniere steak tartare alfresco bearnaise dog friendly

Not one for the faint-hearted as the flavour of the kidney is punchy in this dish. The chef matched it with a strong sour sauce to balance the powerful flavours. €27

Steak tartare (Steak tartare minute Russian service) (Do not recommend)

Paris traditional classic local french restaurant brasserie bistro hyatt regency paris etoile escargot marrow bone whelks oyster seafood sole meuniere steak tartare alfresco bearnaise dog friendly

Dish was severely over-seasoned with horseradish and Worcestershire sauce. Completely masking the beef. €22

Desserts

Crème brulee (Vanilla caramelised custard cream) (Do not recommend)

Paris traditional classic local french restaurant brasserie bistro hyatt regency paris etoile escargot marrow bone whelks oyster seafood sole meuniere steak tartare alfresco bearnaise dog friendly

The layer of sugar was a touch thin, did not give us the satisfying crack when you knock into it. The custard was underwhelming, lacking in richness and vanilla.€10

Mille feuille (Do not recommend)

Paris traditional classic local french restaurant brasserie bistro hyatt regency paris etoile escargot marrow bone whelks oyster seafood sole meuniere steak tartare alfresco bearnaise dog friendly

The puff pastry wafers was not light nor airy. It didn’t taste fresh. The generous vanilla pastry cream was decent and the ice cream with almond flakes was creamy and rich. €12
