A practical ski chalet. It is a great place for family or large groups once you get over the shortcomings and plan accordingly.
Residence Le Cortina in Les Deux Alpes is a dichotomy – it has extras that you won’t find in similarly priced ski chalet but it does lack bits of the essentials. The chalet is a beautiful 6-storey building with a range of 2-bedroom to 5-bedroom self-catered family apartments.
Close to Ski Lifts, Restaurants, Bars and Groceries
Let’s start with the positives. It is located on the popular southern end of Les Deux Alpes. The chalet is a 2 mins walk from the Diable cable car and 15 mins walk to the main Jandri Express 1 and Oœuf Blanche cable car. It is also 8 mins walk to the European Ski School’s Group Lesson’s meeting point and 15 mins walk to ESF’s main Group Lesson’s meeting point. There is a wide selection of restaurants, bars, ski rental shops, groceries right outside it’s door steps. Click here to check out my Top 5 Restaurants in Les Deux Alpes.
Spacious and Well Equipped Family Apartments
The apartment is relatively spacious with decent sized bedrooms, living room, kitchen and bathroom. It is well equipped for self catering with a large fridge, oven, microwave, toaster, espresso machine and plenty of pots, pans, utensils and even a dishwasher. All of the apartments have superb views of the mountains which you can enjoy from the massive balcony. It is also a very handy place to store your suitcases once you have unpacked. In addition to that, there is a large communal ski equipment storage room on the ground floor with heated cupboards.
Restrictive Operational Times
But there are short-comings that you need to be aware and prepared for. It would have been beneficial if these were transparently communicated ahead of booking or at checkin. The chalet has a relaxation facility which includes a sauna, a steam bath and two jacuzzi hot tubs, but it is only open for 2 hours a day between 4pm to 6pm. Plan accordingly or you will miss out on it. Additional towels for use at the facility are provided in the apartment.
Further to that, there are no staff at the reception apart from checkin/checkout days of Friday, Saturday and Sunday. You will have to call the managing agent who also have restricted operating hours if you need any help. They did fix my blocked sink within the same day of calling them.
One Toilet Roll for a Week and No Free Wifi
Dish washing tablets, kitchen cleaning cloths are provided but you only get one toilet roll per bathroom for a one-week booking. Make sure you include it in your grocery shopping. There is no free wifi, it is available at €30 for a week.
Clunky Check Out Policy
Normal checkout is 10am. There are two checkout options. Option one is to book a checkout appointment. A checkout clerk will inspect the apartment for cleanliness and collect your keys. As there is only one checkout clerk, your checkout time is determined by availability of the checkout clerk’s slots. This option will provide peace of mind against a fine for not cleaning the apartment. The other option is to do a key drop. Regardless of your preferred option, I would suggest paying an additional €30 and opt for the late checkout (up to 12pm).
Be Prepared and You Will Enjoy it
In summary, Residence Le Cortina is a practical ski chalet. It is a great place for family or large groups once you get over the shortcomings and plan accordingly.
